I understand that feelings are running very high. I don’t doubt that if I had been abused for decades and lost my loved ones to Bashar al-Assad’s henchmen, I’d be looking for revenge too. But it won’t work. Summary execution of prisoners sets the cause back. The opposition fighters need to show that they’re fit to govern a secular democracy and that they are the rightful heirs to the people’s Syria. That will require a greater strength and bravery.
Of course, it’s easy for me to sit thousands of miles away and pontificate. If I was living in blood and bullets every day, my assessment might not be so calm.
